I have to admit, I was skeptical at first. The idea of spending $9. or better yet $12. on a juice that’s hydraulically pressed between 2 steel plates, a process that doesn’t heat or oxidize the produce, was a bit hard to swallow. The documentary chronicles the epic rise of the Bones Brigade, using archival footage and moving first-person accounts from Brigade members Steve Caballero, Tommy Guerrero, George Powell, Tony Hawk, Mike McGill, Lance Mountain, and Rodney Mullen, amongst other notable skateboarding personalities.

It’s not a death metal band, an extreme diet club or historic dominoes association—the Bones Brigade was a talented gang of teenage outcasts. Unmotivated by fame or popularity, they completely dedicated their lives to a disrespected art form. For most of the 1980s, this misfit crew headed by a 1970s ex-skateboard champion blasted the industry with a mixture of art and raw talent becoming the most popular skateboarding team in history. The core unit of the Bones Brigade built an empire that covered the world. They dominated contests, made hundreds of thousands of dollars, created the modern skateboard video, reinvented endemic advertising, pushed skate progression into a new era, and set the stage for a totally new form of skating called street style. There’s nothing comparable in today’s skateboarding.

The film was screened at Sundance 2012 and the festival took some time to interview Director, Stacey Peralta, and subjects of the upcoming documentary. You can watch the interview, Bones Brigade: An Unexpected Journey on the Sundance YouTube Channel.

Born in 1982, Istanbul; Tamer Nakışçı is an interdisciplinary designer with a strong vision and fascination for the future.

He studied Industrial Design at Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts. He started his career at Fiat Advanced Design Concept Lab – Milan in 2004, followed by his first international award in 2005 at the Nokia Benelux Design Awards with his groundbreaking “888” concept. The Stillhouse Distillery is located in Culpeper, Virginia. It’s here at the famed Civil War hotspot that Chuck Miller began farming with his wife Jeanette in 1975. Five years later, Chuck decided to start making legal moonshine but in the same fashion that his grandfather did decades before.  After a lengthy process to secure a license, Chuck Miller became the first official legal craft distiller in the United Sates in 1987.  Six years ago chef Adam Perry Lang joined Chuck and in 2010 they unveiled The Original Moonshine.

We love the limited edition (500) promotional packaging they sent to VIPs. Freedom to Shine appears to be a two-volume leather bound book that would make Ron Burgundy proud. It secretly contains a bottle of the Moonshine amidst several pages that detail the rich history of the sacred spirit. We must say it’s quite appropriate and if you can manage to get your hands on one (unlikely) it will most certainly compliment the smell of rich mahogany coming from your apartment. Trust us, this stuff is made for sippin.

The Avant/Garde Diaries presents Transmission LA: AV CLUB at the MOCA, curated by Mike D. To create 17 days of programming that includes concerts, DJ nights, performances and installations the Beastie Boy himself identified and invited 17 artists from a variety of disciplines to create bespoke, site specific work.

As previously mentioned, all of the programming is free and open to the public, although there have been complaints from concerned MOCA patrons stating that the opening night of the Transmission LA: AV Club in addition to prior museum events have been mismanaged.

Similar to Jeffrey Deitch’s  2011 MOCA exhibition Art in the Streets, the Transmission LA: AV Club would make an excellent case study example. Something that should no doubt be an addendum to the Ryan McGinness book, SPONSORSHIP: The Fine Art of Corporate Sponsorship / The Corporate Sponsorship of Fine Art.

That being said the Avant/Garde Diaries website mentions that  a special highlight of the Transmission LA is the artistic staging of the Mercedes-Benz Concept Style Coupé which will be unveiled to the world for the first time.

Mike D adds, “The show car of the Transmission LA: AV CLUB is its own piece of art, therefore Robert McKinley and I placed it in the very center of the exhibition, where it is perceived as part of the overall concept.” Well said Mike D. Well said.
