Lunchables and mom’s sack lunches kept us happily fed when we were able, young and growing bodies. We’ve since moved on to cheese plates while we’re out on the town and now plenty of restaurants offer custom cheese and charcuterie plates. It’s fun to do at home and now Cheese and Crack, the brain child of William Frederick Steuernagel V, wants to make it easy to do on the fly. Imagine an impromptu snack at the park, an easy picnic or a cute way to say I love you (or I’m sorry). Yes it’s simply crackers, cheese & charcuterie from a food cart available in Portland, OR. They’re trying to raise some funds using Kickstarter. Which begs us to ask, Cheese and Crack, how are you doing it? We’re making the crackers from scratch and sourcing the cheese, charcuterie, and all the accoutrements from purveyors as local as we could find. Convenient.

It took us a while to warm up to and finally after we sampled just one sip of the Spiced Yam juice (garnet yam, carrot, red apple, cinnamon and ginger) we were sold. Next step Tumeric Gold – tumeric root and red apple. Moon Juice Shop bottles clean and simple flavor combinations daily to whet your whistle. With proper refrigeration their juices will remain fermentation free and nutritionally packed, they should keep 3-4 days but we challenge you not to finish the whole damn thing before you leave the shop. The film is about the birth of modern skateboarding and it showcases the personalities that helped define and shape the sport as we know it today. Regardless of whether you preferred Christian Hosoi’s style or Tony Hawk’s bag of tricks during their head-to-head heyday you will enjoy this emotional roller coaster through skateboarding’s early days. The documentary chronicles the epic rise of the Bones Brigade, using archival footage and moving first-person accounts from Brigade members Steve Caballero, Tommy Guerrero, George Powell, Tony Hawk, Mike McGill, Lance Mountain, and Rodney Mullen, amongst other notable skateboarding personalities. It’s not a death metal band, an extreme diet club or historic dominoes association—the Bones Brigade was a talented gang of teenage outcasts.

It’s not a death metal band, an extreme diet club or historic dominoes association—the Bones Brigade was a talented gang of teenage outcasts. Unmotivated by fame or popularity, they completely dedicated their lives to a disrespected art form. For most of the 1980s, this misfit crew headed by a 1970s ex-skateboard champion blasted the industry with a mixture of art and raw talent becoming the most popular skateboarding team in history. The core unit of the Bones Brigade built an empire that covered the world. They dominated contests, made hundreds of thousands of dollars, created the modern skateboard video, reinvented endemic advertising, pushed skate progression into a new era, and set the stage for a totally new form of skating called street style. There’s nothing comparable in today’s skateboarding.

The film was screened at Sundance 2012 and the festival took some time to interview Director, Stacey Peralta, and subjects of the upcoming documentary. You can watch the interview, Bones Brigade: An Unexpected Journey on the Sundance YouTube Channel.

It’s here at the famed Civil War hotspot that Chuck Miller began farming with his wife Jeanette in 1975. Five years later, Chuck decided to start making legal moonshine but in the same fashion that his grandfather did decades before. After a lengthy process to secure a license, Chuck Miller became the first official legal craft distiller in the United Sates in 1987. Six years ago chef Adam Perry Lang joined Chuck and in 2010 they unveiled The Original Moonshine. We love the limited edition (500) promotional packaging they sent to VIPs. Freedom to Shine appears to be a two-volume leather bound book that would make Ron Burgundy proud. It secretly contains a bottle of the Moonshine amidst several pages that detail the rich history of the sacred spirit.
The Avant/Garde Diaries is a digital interview magazine that documents personal views on the avant-garde.
Rather than labeling people avant-garde, we try to see through the eyes of people, who we admire for what they do. For each article we ask contributors from the creative field to introduce someone or something they consider to be ahead of time and explain why. The result will be a compendium of various, very personal perspectives that disclose new ways of thinking and spread inspiration.

Corresponding to this digital platform, festivals will be hosted in metropolises around the world. Each event will be curated by an expert from the creative industry, showcasing his or her personal view on avant-garde. For information on upcoming and past events please check the Event category on this site.

New York, prepare yourself for approximately 75 food vendors, 35 brewers, 30 winemakers and 20 live music performances coming your way on May 19th & 20th, 2012 at Brooklyn’s historic Prospect Park. Although it’s free to attend, registration is closed. However, $249.50 will get you an Extra Mooga ticket. As of today they are still available. The all-inclusive pass will provide you with endless food, beer, wine and exclusive cocktail offerings. In addition to gorging yourself you’ll be able to pick and choose from an array of experiences and activities including Hamageddon, UrBarn Experience, The Hamburger Experience, The Pizza Experience and The Sweet Experience – all meant to showcase the best talent NY has to offer.
